Meet Chris

Hello, my name is Chris Sykora, and I’m proud to announce my upcoming candidacy for the Southern Lehigh School Board. My life’s path has been shaped by a commitment to education, a passion for leadership, and a belief in the power of community. I hope to bring these values to serve the families and students of our district.

Early Life and Education

I was born and raised in Newark, Ohio, where I attended public schools from kindergarten through 12th grade. Those years instilled in me a deep respect for educators and the transformative power of public education. My enthusiasm for problem-solving and teamwork led me to pursue a degree in Aerospace Engineering at Penn State University

At Penn State, I was not only immersed in academics but also in community and service. In 2006 and 2007, I danced in THON, Penn State’s annual dance marathon to support pediatric cancer research. In 2007, I had the incredible honor of dancing alongside my future wife, Kristen. These experiences taught me about perseverance, dedication, and the importance of giving back.

After earning my Bachelor’s degree, I began my career in engineering while continuing my education. I earned a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati in 2011. Additionally, I pursued leadership development through a minor in Engineering Leadership at Penn State and completed executive courses at the Jack Welch Leadership Development Center while working with GE Aviation.

Career and Leadership

I’ve been fortunate to have a diverse and fulfilling career in engineering, starting with seven years at General Electric (now GE Aerospace) in Cincinnati, Ohio. During my time there, I worked on advanced military aircraft engines, specializing in structural analysis and innovative technologies. I also had the privilege of serving as Communications Officer and later Board President of the Greater Cincinnati Penn State Alumni Association, where I developed organizational and leadership skills.

In 2014, Kristen and I moved to the Lehigh Valley to be closer to her family. Since then, I’ve worked on cutting-edge turbomachinery, cryogenic systems, and pressure vessel design at Rotating Machinery Services, Air Products, and Cryo Technologies. During a career break in 2019, I served as a Substitute Teacher in Bethlehem public schools. That experience gave me firsthand insight into the challenges faced by educators and students alike.

Family and Community

Kristen and I have been married since 2011, and we are proud parents to our son, Benjamin. Kristen is a dedicated Neurosurgery Nurse Practitioner at Lehigh Valley Health Network, where she’s made a difference in patients’ lives for the past decade. Benjamin is currently a second grader at Hopewell Elementary in the Southern Lehigh School District. He’s an active Little Leaguer, and I had the joy of coaching his team this past fall.

We live in Center Valley near Hopewell, a community that has been our home since 2020. Being part of this vibrant area has strengthened my resolve to give back and ensure our schools continue to thrive.

Why I’m Running for School Board

My experiences as an engineer, a teacher, a coach, and a community member have shaped my perspective on the importance of education. I’ve seen how leadership, teamwork, and critical thinking are vital not just in the workplace but in preparing students for success. I’m passionate about supporting teachers, fostering academic excellence, and ensuring that every child in our district has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

I believe that education is a partnership between schools, families, and the broader community. As a school board director, I will advocate for policies that prioritize student well-being, academic achievement, and fiscal responsibility. I’m committed to listening to parents, engaging with teachers, and collaborating with fellow board members to make informed, thoughtful decisions.

Closing Thoughts

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about me. I’m excited about the opportunity to serve our community and work together to shape a brighter future for our children. I hope to earn your support in the upcoming election.

Engineering Problem Solver

With 18 years of mechanical engineering experience and seven years of collegiate engineering education, I’ve honed my ability to solve complex problems on large-scale projects with tight budgets and demanding schedules. Working in diverse teams and matrixed organizations has taught me how to collaborate effectively, balance competing priorities, and deliver results under pressure. These same skills are key to addressing the challenges of future growth and proactive maintenance in our school district, where teamwork, strategic planning, and fiscal responsibility are essential. Whether leading engineering work or tackling DIY projects at home, I’m committed to finding practical solutions that make a real impact.

Board Leadership Experience

During my time with the Greater Cincinnati Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association, I served as Communications Director for two (2) years and Board President for three (3) years. An organization thriving still today. Leading this organization gave me invaluable experience in leadership, teamwork, and effective communication. I worked with diverse groups of people to organize events, manage budgets, and strengthen alumni connections. These skills translate directly to the responsibilities of a school board member, where collaboration and clear communication are essential to making informed decisions that benefit our students, teachers, and community.

Mental Health Advocate

Throughout my career, I’ve been a strong advocate for mental health, both for others and for myself. I’ve faced my own mental health challenges brought on by work-related stress, and those experiences have taught me the importance of fostering supportive environments. I’ve encouraged open conversations, supported colleagues during tough times, and advocated for resources to help navigate the pressures of demanding projects. These experiences have deepened my empathy and commitment to mental well-being. On the Southern Lehigh School Board, I’ll prioritize initiatives that support the mental health of our students, teachers, and staff, ensuring everyone has the resources they need to thrive.

Public School Success

I grew up attending Newark City Schools in Newark, Ohio, a public school system that constantly faced funding challenges but made the most of its resources to deliver exceptional results. I saw firsthand how dedicated teachers and staff worked tirelessly to ensure every student had the opportunity to succeed, even in difficult circumstances. That experience shaped my deep respect for public education and laid the foundation for my own success, eventually allowing me to join the Southern Lehigh community as an engineer, parent, and advocate for education. I’m committed to ensuring our district continues to use its resources wisely to provide the best outcomes for all students.
